The Paper Magician; Charlie N. Holmberg

Hello Fellow Readers!

So I’ve been trying to hit my goal of 26 books to read this year and well since it’s already more than halfway through the year I knew I had to get my butt in gear. I’m actually not sure how I discovered this book, but I can’t tell you how much I am glad I did, this book helped me sort of settle back into my book reading groove.

The Paper Magician is the first of  in The Paper Magician series, which also includes two other books, both of which I do plan to read

The Paper Magician Synopsis

Title: The Paper Magician (The Paper Magician Trilogy Book #1)
Author Charlie N. Holmberg
Genre: FantasyMagic
Publication Date: September 1st 2014

'Ceony Twill arrives at the cottage of Magician Emery Thane with a broken heart. Having graduated at the top of her class from the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, Ceony is assigned an apprenticeship in paper magic despite her dreams of bespelling metal. And once she’s bonded to paper, that will be her only magic…forever.
Yet the spells Ceony learns under the strange yet kind Thane turns out to be more marvelous than she could have ever imagined—animating paper creatures, bringing stories to life via ghostly images, even reading fortunes. But as she discovers these wonders, Ceony also learns of the extraordinary dangers of forbidden magic.
An Excisioner—a practitioner of dark, flesh magic—invades the cottage and rips Thane’s heart from his chest. To save her teacher’s life, Ceony must face the evil magician and embark on an unbelievable adventure that will take her into the chambers of Thane’s still-beating heart—and reveal the very soul of the man.'

Rating

Ceony, the main Heroine of the story, at first to me seemed like a spoiled little brat, she doesn’t want to become a paper magician (but to be honest when they say the other types of magic you could bond to, you probably wouldn’t either) but she seemed downright rude in the beginning, however as she warms up to her new magic I found myself warming up to Ceony. She is the type of main character who you find yourself connecting to, whose flaws and strengths seem to reflect your own.

Holmberg’s writing was great making sure to keep you interested, I like that despite the seriousness of the situation that Ceony finds herself in, Holmberg kept her wit and kept Ceony in character and made her react to problems in a believable way.

I also like how detailed Holmberg is, in The Paper Magician, giving you enough so you can imagine yourself (if you wanted to) in the book but at the same time not shoving every little thing down your throat. One thing I found that peeved me a little was the climax at the end, it felt a tiny bit rushed. I was hoping for a bit more use of the magic, especially Ceony. The Excisioner was described as overpowered and scary however with the ease she was dispatched was a bit disappointing.
I do recommend this book as I enjoyed it immensely, as a matter of fact, I am already reading the second book The Glass Magician.
